About The Artist
Jan Sawka was a painter, print-maker, graphic artist, set designer and architect. Jan Sawka grew up in Communist-controlled Poland in the 1950s. By his late 20s he was a star counter-culture artist in the Polish Poster School, whose convictions led to forced service in Poland’s military punishment battalion and later expulsion from Poland. He continued his successful career, first living in France, then New York City, and finally, in the Hudson Valley. During his career, he created editorial drawings for The New York Times, designed the iconic Solidarity poster, and created a 10-story-tall art installation for the Grateful Dead’s 25th Anniversary tour.
The Polish School of Posters (roughly 1950s–1980s) was an internationally renowned art movement that combined painterly techniques with graphic design to create metaphor-driven, witty, and artistic posters. Emerging in post-WWII communist Poland, artists used symbolism, bold colors, and hand-lettering to bypass censorship and express intellectual freedom, focusing on film, theater, and circus themes.
